A pageant contestant from Kansas is the 2013 National Miss Czech-Slovak Queen.
Anna Hand was crowned queen at one of the closing events of the annual Wilber Czech Festival, which this year honored the community’s 140 years of existence.
The first runner-up in the queen pageant was Miss Nebraska, Danielle Patzel. Second runner-up was Brittany Smisek, Miss Minnesota.
A total of nine contestants participated in the two-day pageant, representing the states of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois, Minnesota Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota.
Hand receives a $2,000 cash prize and a trip to the Czech Republic, plus a $250 scholarship, a crown, sash and flowers.
Nebraska Czechs of Wilber Secretary Sheryl Kastanek says organizers estimated festival attendance at 45,000 to 50,000, helped mainly by unusually cool, mild weather.
