A driver, attempting to elude police, died this weekend after crashing his car south of Beatrice.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office reports 44-year-old Jerry Wissler of Peru fled from Beatrice police and hit a bridge railing on a road east of Highway 77. The car flipped onto its top and came to rest in the south ditch. Wissler was partially ejected from the car.
Beatrice Police Sergeant Brian Carver said police first received a call of a southbound auto, weaving between lanes in north Beatrice early Saturday afternoon.
“We were in pursuit of a vehicle that was a vehicle complaint coming in to the city of Beatrice. A city officer saw the vehicle, tried to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop,” Carver told Nebraska State Network affiliate KWBE.
Carver said Lincoln police reported the car fled when police there attempted to stop it for a traffic violation.
Carver said the caller complained about erratic driving.
“The information that we had, the vehicle was all over the road, basically from ditch to ditch.”
Carver said Wissler didn’t speed through the city. He simply refused to stop for police.
A grand jury might be empaneled to investigate the death under Nebraska law.
