The search is on for a new fire chief in Omaha. Mike McDonnell agreed to retire as chief effective immediately after an on-going battle with Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert.
McDonnell is 2 months shy of serving 24 years on the department but he will receive credit to retire at 25 years. Mayor Stothert agreed not to lay off any firefighters and to retain three assistant chiefs through July of 2014. She says this will put an end to a legal marathon as the mayor’s office and the fire department battled over the budget.
Battalion Chief Bernie Kanger will serve as interim chief until the position is filled.
