Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s with a heat index of more than 100-degrees on Saturday and that has University of Nebraska – Lincoln officials concerned about the safety of fans attending the Husker game. They encourage everyone to take steps to avoid a heat related illness.
Officials say many seats will be in direct sunlight which can raise the heat index by an additional 15-degrees. Large gatherings of people in close contact also contribute to higher heat indexes by limiting the impact of breezes. It also increases humidity.
They do recommend that fans wear light colored, loose fitting clothing, drink plenty of water, take breaks in shaded areas and try to get into air conditioning as often as possible. Water fountains are located on the main concourses of Memorial Stadium and two large portable water fountains will be added on Saturday. At Saturday’s game fans will be permitted to bring their own commercial bottled water containers up to 20 ounces into the stadium.
First Aid Stations are in the southeast corner of field level, East Stadium upper concourse, East Stadium club level, northwest concourse and West Stadium club level. An emergency heart unit is in the northwest concourse and advanced cardiac life support in the southeast corner of field level. Boy Scout volunteers will also be on hand to assist those in need.
