Congressman Lee Terry is among about 30 Republican lawmakers targeted in an online and telephone campaign launched by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee criticizing their stance on the fiscal fight on Capitol Hill.
The campaign started a couple of weeks ago when the DCCC paid for robo calls in the Second Congressional District, which is the greater Omaha area of Douglas and Sarpy Counties.
The DCCC paid for automated telephone calls within the district, urging callers to contact Congressman Terry and ask him not to shut down the federal government.
The federal fiscal year begins tomorrow, October 1st. There at present is no authorization for the federal government to continue functioning. Legislation to extend that authorization for the next three months has stalled in Congress as the call by House Republicans either to not fund the federal healthcare law or to delay it is met by resistance by Democrats in the Senate.
If agreement cannot be reached, non-essential federal services could be curtailed.
Democrats accuse House Republicans, including Terry, of threatening to shut down the government in order to gut the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare.
The script of the automated calls is below:
“Hi, I’m calling on behalf of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee with a Voter Information Alert. Republicans in Congress are threatening to shut down the government unless they can eliminate your rights and consumer protections under the Affordable Care Act. You heard that right: take away healthcare or shut down the government. That’s the choice. It’s appalling.
“And if Congressman Lee Terry doesn’t make it stop, seniors’ Social Security checks would be up in the air and our military families couldn’t count on getting paid. It would have a devastating impact on families around the country.
“And what does this mean for you? It means Republicans are trying to take away your right to health insurance – even if you have a preexisting condition – and let the insurance companies start charging outrageous rates again. And if they can’t get it done, they are going to close the doors of our government.
“Press 1 to be connected with Congressman Terry and tell him to stop the nonsense and focus on common sense solutions that protect our health care and grow our economy.”
The DCCC follow up the robo calls with a paid Facebook campaign entitled “This Is Insanity.”
This campaign suggests the aim of Republicans is to kill the healthcare law to pad health insurance company profits. It asks Nebraska voters to sign a petition to tell Terry to stop “playing political games with our economy and focus on commonsense solutions that protect our heath care and grow our economy. “
The web-based campaign is aimed to engage young voters.
“No one in their right mind thinks Congressman Lee Terry’s march toward shutdown is sane, and young voters are especially disgusted with padding insurance companies’ profits at their expense,” said Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in a written statement released by the DCCC. “Congressman Terry decided that it’s more important to give insurance companies free rein over our health care decisions than make sure we pay military families and distribute seniors’ Social Security checks – and that’s just insanity.”
Democrats believe Terry is vulnerable in 2014 after escaping an upset bid by Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing, Jr. in 2012. Terry won by just over 4,000 votes out of nearly 264,000 cast.
