Five schoolchildren suffered minor injuries this morning after a car rear-ended a Waverly school bus.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports that the injured children, ranging in age from 11 to 14, were taken to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Lincoln.
The patrol states the wreck occurred at 8 o’clock this morning at the intersection of North 176th Street and Fletcher Avenue. The school bus from School District 145 in Waverly had stopped at the intersection. It began to drive through the intersection when struck from behind by a car.
The driver of the car, 23-year-old Tiffany Wiley of Lincoln, told officers she couldn’t see the bus due to dust from the road. She has been given a ticket for following too closely and not wearing a seat belt. The bus driver, 55-year-old Joel Armstrong, was not injured.
There were 45 students on the bus.
Waverly Fire & Rescue as well as rescue units from Eagle, Alvo and Southeast Rural assisted the Nebraska State Patrol at the scene. The investigation continues.
