A prison inmate assaulted a state correctional officer while being treated at a Lincoln hospital.
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services reports inmate Robert Carter was subdued after the attack very early this morning at Bryan West Campus.
The officer, Adam Benischek, has been released from Bryan West after being treated for cuts to his head, neck, and ear.
According to the department, Benischek escorted Carter to the restroom. Carter yelled at the officer, turned toward him and hit him on the head. Carter began to flee and when Benischek ordered him to stop, Carter turned on the officer and attacked him with a metal butter knife.
Carter was in leg restraints the entire time, according to the department. Law enforcement officers present at the hospital subdued him outside his hospital room.
The department reports Carter was being treated at Bryan, because his medical care exceeded the scope of what the Nebraska State Penitentiary can provide.
Carter is serving a 30 year sentence from Douglas and Sarpy Counties for the offenses of Attempted Assault on an Officer, two counts of Use of Weapon, and six counts of robbery. Carter entered the prison system in January 2008.
Department of Correctional Services investigators are working with the Lincoln Police Department on the investigation.
