Redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong Jr. will be making his third start Saturday at Purdue. Bo Pelini says Taylor Martinez is improving, but that doesn’t say when Martinez may be able to play again. Wide receiver Jamaal Turner is doing better and will play. Tight end Jake Long is out with a hamstring issue.
Last week, Pat Smith missed an extra point attempt and that prompted Pelini to give Mauro Bondi a shot later in the second half. He missed an extra point as well. Heading into Purdue, no changes in the kicking game. Smith, a transfer from Western Illinois is 3 of 3 on field goals this year, his longest being 32 yards.
True freshman, Danny Etling will get the start at quarterback for Purdue . In a 55-24 loss to Northern Illinois, Etling came in off the bench and threw for 241 yards. He threw two touchdowns, but also got picked off twice. Pelini expects Purdue to sling the ball around.
