Reading and literacy are two of former 1st Lady Laura Bush’s favorite topics. The importance of education was her topic at a lecture Tuesday at the Century Link Center in Omaha.
Mrs. Bush was in Omaha attending a fundraiser for the Phoenix Academy, an organization that helps students who struggle to learn math and reading. She said the money raised at the fundraiser will go to literacy scholarships for children in Nebraska to attend to Phoenix Academy. She says these children that are behind on reading skills will be able to catch up with their peers.
