Skeletal remains found earlier this month along the I-480 bridge in Council Bluffs, Iowa have been identified as those of an Omaha man last seen nearly two years ago.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office used dental records to identify the remains as those of 21-year-old Chance Fletcher of Omaha.
Fletcher was last seen alive on December 15th of 2011, fleeing from police.
According to authorities, Fletcher was driving a stolen car when a Carter Lake police officer tried to pull him over. Fletcher sped off. A pursuit ensued. Fletcher wrecked the car near the I-480 bridge in Council Bluffs, then took off on foot.
A search by the Council Bluff’s Police Department, the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Omaha Police Department proved fruitless.
The case was revived when the Omaha Police Department’s Missing Person’s Unit with the assistance of the Council Bluff’s Police Department began a cold case investigation by searching the area October 11th. Searchers found the skeletal remains in a drainage ditch on the south side of the I-480 bridge, adjacent to where Fletcher was last seen.
