For the first time in two-and-a-half years Omaha Public Power District is testing equipment at the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant. Spokesman Jeff Hansen says they are testing the pressurized steam pipes for leaks. Hansen says they are not testing the reactor coolant system and not the reactor itself.
The Ft. Calhoun plant shut down in April of 2011 for refueling and maintenance but shortly after came the Missouri River flood and water surrounded the plant. Next a fire and other safety issues prevented the plant from reopening. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is overseeing work being done to get the plant back online.
