Two 14 year old boys, two 15 year old boys and a 17 year old male were taken to Omaha police headquarters after officers responded to a burglary call Monday in the southeast part of the city. The home is that of Omaha City Councilman Garry Gernandt.
When Officers arrived they could hear noises coming from inside the home and located the five juveniles inside and took them into custody. A gun that was reportedly taken in another burglary was recovered. Detectives are investigating if the suspects are involved in additional burglaries.
A neighbor saw the boys breaking in to Gernandt’s home and first called the police and then the councilman. Gernandt says it appears they were going after his computer and some of his old police gear. The former police officer was there to see the teens put into squad cars and taken to police headquarters.
The two 15 year old suspects are already on probation for burglary. The 17 year old suspect was wearing an ankle monitor and was on probation for burglary. That teen was also booked for felon in possession of a firearm.
