As the Husker defense gets ready for Penn State, they’ll go up against true freshman quarterback Christian Hackenburg who sure doesn’t play like one. He’s third in the Big Ten with 239 passing yards per game and he’s only been picked off nine times in 329 passing attempts. Defensive coordinator John Papuchis won’t tip his hand as to whether or not they’ll blitz like crazy, something they like to do against pocket passers.
Hackenburg does have a favorite target. Earlier this week I mentioned Allen Robinson, named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, honoring the country’s top wide receiver. The junior leads the conference with 81 receptions for 1,204 yards with six touchdowns.
There is still a lot to play for this Nebraska football season, even on a personal level for running back Ameer Abdullah. The athletic department even created a website for Ameer to highlight his accomplishments as post season awards will soon be selected and voted on. Abdullah ranks 6th nationally in rushing yards and is one of just three backs in the nation that lead their team in total offense. He trails only Heisman winners Johnny Rodgers and Mike Rozier in career all-purpose yards. He is the only running back in the last 16 games to gain over 100 yards rushing against Michigan State’s defense…and he’s done it twice.
