Hunters didn’t get as many deer this year.
The drop in numbers was expected.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reports hunters in Nebraska took 36,882 deer during the nine-day firearm season, a 21% decline from 2012.
The commission eliminated approximately 87,000 permits and bonus tags in 2013; a response to the epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) outbreak of 2012.
Harvest totals by Game and Parks district were: Northeast, 9,290; Northwest, 5,705; Southeast, 7,457; and Southwest, 14,430.
The deer harvest this year is expected to reach around 50,000 at the conclusion of all the various hunting seasons. Various seasons run through January 18th. The archery season runs through the end of the year. The muzzleloader season runs the month of December.
Game and Parks reports archers have taken more than 2,400 whitetail bucks compared to 1,843 whitetail bucks taken during the same time span in 2012.
