The Nebraska volleyball team was chosen as one of 16 to host the NCAA first and second-rounds next weekend. The Huskers will be making their 32nd NCAA Tournament appearance and they will go in as the No. 8 overall seed among the 64 teams. Play will start on Friday, Dec. 6 when the Oregon Ducks (19-11) of the Pac-12 Conference will take on the Miami Hurricanes (19-11) of the Atlantic Coast Conference at 4:30 p.m. Nebraska (23-6) will then take the court during Friday’s second match and will face the Fairfield Stags (19-12), who recently won their second consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship title. The Huskers’ match will start at 7 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first match.
The second round will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m., as Friday’s winners will compete for the right to move on to the Lincoln Regional the following weekend. The winner out of Lincoln will take on either San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, New Mexico State or Arizona, who will all be playing in San Diego, CA.
Creighton will return to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament for the third time in four years after picking up an at-large bid in this year’s 64-team field. Creighton (22-8, 12-4 BIG EAST) will meet Arkansas (16-13, 9-9 SEC) in a match played at Lawrence, Kansas, on Friday at 4 p.m. Central. The winner of the Creighton/Arkansas match will meet the victor of the Wichita State/Kansas match, also in Lawrence.
Creighton tied for second during its inaugural season in the BIG EAST and were runner-up at the BIG EAST Tournament. Creighton is making its third trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history. The Bluejays earned an at-large bid in 2010, defeating No. 16 Iowa State (3-2) before falling to No. 12 Minnesota (3-0) in Minneapolis, MN. Last season Creighton earned an automatic bid and again went 1-1, defeating Marquette (3-0) before falling to No. 11 Minnesota (3-1), again in Minneapolis.
