The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for several counties in far northwest Nebraska, for cities including Scottsbluff, Alliance and Chadron. A Winter Weather Advisory extends across much of north-central Nebraska.
Travel is becoming iffy as roads in some areas are quickly becoming snow-covered and very slick with visibility being obscured by blowing snow.
In addition to the freezing precipitation, temperatures are plummeting to bitter cold levels, with highs expected in the single digits and lows in the teens-below-zero. The very cold weather is expected to last several more days, with another snowstorm possible this weekend.
Forecasters say the wintery storm system should bring just a chance of snow to southeastern Nebraska, with Lincoln expecting only a dusting and Omaha being missed by snow entirely.
According to the calendar, winter officially arrives two weeks from Saturday, on December 21st.
