Attorney General Jon Bruning has disclosed he has colon cancer.
Bruning is scheduled to have surgery Thursday. Surgeons will remove eight inches of his colon as well as some lymph nodes.
Bruning, who is 44, said a colonoscopy last month discovered the cancer.
“I feel great, I have the support of wonderful family and friends and a job I love,” Bruning said in a written statement released by his office. “Like millions of Americans who have been diagnosed with cancer, I will move forward with treatment and am optimistic for a clean bill of health after surgery. I encourage Nebraskans to make their health a priority and remember early detection saves lives.”
Bruning will undergo surgery at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln. Recovery at the hospital might take up to a full week.
Bruning has been Attorney General since 2002. He ran unsuccessfully for United States Senate in 2012.
