The month of December is a busy one for volunteers with the American Red Cross, Nebraska and western Iowa Region. Spokesperson Liz Dorland says from December 1st through the 13th they responded to 33 house fires in the region. They helped 117 victims with food, clothing and shelter. Dorland says they typically see an increase in the number of fires during the holiday season. She says they are typically caused by mishaps with decorations, kitchen fires, candles and the use of alternate heating sources.
Dorland says the American Red Cross is always in need of volunteers and monetary donations to help fund the services they provide.
