A western Nebraska jury has convicted a rural Sidney of killing his girlfriend.
A 12-person jury of five men and seven women returned its verdict against Craig Johnson Monday according to the Cheyenne County Attorney’s Office. The 48-year-old Johnson will be sentenced on February 14th and faces life in prison for murder, and could get over 50 more years on two other convictions related to the killing.
Forty-two-year-old April Smith was discovered bound and stabbed in the apartment she and Johnson shared at Sioux Meadows Park about eight miles west of Sidney in December 2011. Authorities believe Johnson became enraged at Smith because she let her ex-husband fix her vehicle.
Johnson was nowhere to be found after the discovery of Smith’s body but he was ultimately captured after a short vehicle pursuit in Michigan a few days later.
