Two are dead in central Nebraska from gunshot wounds, including a two-year-old, in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide.
Dead are 31-year-old Christopher Melling of Burwell and his daughter, Aimee Melling, who would have been three later this month.
The Garfield County Attorney reports police officers discovered the bodies of the two Tuesday afternoon after breaking a window to gain access to the home to conduct a welfare check. Neighbors had called police after seeing no recent activity at the home.
A single firearm was recovered at the scene.
Autopsies have been scheduled.
The investigation continues. The Nebraska State Patrol this afternoon confirmed it has become the lead investigating agency and is investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide. The Burwell Police Department and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
