A person seriously injured in the EF4 tornado that hit Wayne in early October has returned to work after what his employer calls “a remarkable recovery.”
John Dunning, the chief information officer for Wayne State College, received a hero’s welcome from friends, fellow workers, faculty, staff, and students on campus during a surprise homecoming route through downtown Wayne and the Wayne State campus January 10th.
The tornado October 4th caused widespread damage to houses and businesses in Wayne when it hit the edge of the city.
Wayne State College reported Dunning got pinned against his vehicle by a dumpster while trying to flee to a ditch. A passenger in the car made it to the ditch safely and rode out the storm. Dunning was taken to a Sioux City hospital.
No one died in the tornado. Dunning was the only one seriously injured.
