On Monday, Governor Dave Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning announced legislation that would require violent inmates to earn their good time instead of it automatically given. Senator Scott Lautenbaugh of Omaha will sponsor this legislation.
Senator Lautenbaugh says his priority is protecting the public from violent offenders first and the remainder second due to limited resources.
Senator Lautenbaugh says it remains to be seen if this could cause overcrowding issues, lengthening of some sentences and increased costs. He says if it does it is worth it in the case of violent offenders to pursue this route.
