Doug McDermott got off a 25-footer with 2.8 seconds left and nailed the shot to finish with a season-high 39-points, as 20th ranked Creighton defeated St. John’s 63-60 after letting an 18-point lead get away Tuesday night at CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
Creighton went on a 19-3 run, holding the Red Storm without a field goal for more than eight minutes, and led 48-30 with 11 minutes to play. At that point, McDermott matched St. John’s with 30 points.
St. John’s turned up the heat defensively over the next nine and half minutes and outscored the Bluejays 30-12 in that span to tie the game at 58-58 with 1:37 to play. McDermott hit a jumper and Red Storm freshman Rysheed Jordan sank two free throws with 11.1 remaining to tie the game.
McDermott came off a screen and hit the open jumper for the lead and victory.
The win was Creighton’s 14 straight at home. They’ll play again Feb. 7 when they host DePaul.
