A manufacturer which supplies steel tubing to the oil and gas industry plans to build a factory in Norfolk, eventually employing 200 people.
Tejas Tubular Products owner Max Tejeda said he had considered locating in South Dakota, to be close to the Bakken oil fields, then was persuaded to locate in Nebraska.
“I am really duly impressed with Nebraskans’ ability to get things done. That is not the case everywhere. For example, look at Washington,” Tejeda said to laughter during a news conference held by Gov. Dave Heineman in his Capitol office.
Tejeda expects the factory to be built in the latter part of 2015. He says the company might add on after that, expanding space and adding even more jobs.
Tejeda said a business philosophy has guided the Houston-based company’s growth since it was founded in 1990.
“We attribute our growth to putting our customers first and to our simple set of priorities,” Tejeda said. “Number one, safety and environmental. Number two, quality and customer satisfaction. Number three, productivity and cost-effectiveness. We don’t even say profitability, because we don’t control that. The markets control that.”
Tejeda said the company expects nearly everyone who works in the Norfolk factory to be Nebraska residents.
“Now, we’re making our first job offer to a soon-to-be engineering graduate from Nebraska,” according to Tejeda. “And you have my commitment that, just like we made in Indiana, 98% of the people we hire will be from this community.”
Construction on a 350,000 square foot factory should begin this spring. It is projected to be completed in the third quarter of next year.
Nucor Steel Bar Bill, located near Norfolk, will supply approximately 150,000 tons of steel for products that include casing, drill pipe, and line pipe for oil and gas production.
Tejas will take advantage of economic development incentives. It qualifies for incentives under Nebraska Advantage Tier six. The state will spend $1.4 million from its Site and Building Development Fund. The city of Norfolk has earmarked $3.6 million for the project.
