Three members of a Lincoln family died after their car lost control on icy I-80 and crossed the median into the path of a semi tractor-trailer.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports 42-year-old Ranulfo Martinez Lopez, his 39-year-old wife Maria Fernandez, and their six-year old daughter Amy Lopez were killed in the crash.
The driver of the semi, 60-year-old Yves LaTour of Quebec, Canada, was not injured, according to the patrol.
NSP reports Lopez was driving too fast for the icy road conditions when he lost control traveling west on I-80. The 1995 Honda Civic was struck by the semi traveling east on the interstate.
The wreck occurred Saturday morning near the Utica exit in Seward County.
The patrol closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 between Utica and Beaver Crossing for more than five hours for the crash investigation and clean-up. The westbound lanes were closed for about two hours.
Seward and Hall County sheriff’s offices assisted the Nebraska State Patrol in responding to the accident, along with emergency workers from Seward and Utica. The Seward County Attorney also helped in the investigation.
