D’Angelo Harrison scored eight points in the final 2:10 to help host St. John’s upset No. 12 Creighton, 70-65, on Sunday night at Madison Square Garden. Creighton fell to 19-4 with the loss and into second in the BIG EAST with a 9-2 mark.
St. John’s continued to own the lead the rest of the half, and led 40-36 at intermission and Creighton fell behind by as many as seven points, but the Jays responded with an 8-0 run, taking a 47-46 lead on a basket by Austin Chatman.
Creighton took a 63-61 lead with 2:18 left, but Harrison drilled a long three-pointer from the left wing to give St. John’s a two-point lead with 2:10 left. Creighton had three chances to take the lead on its next possession, but couldn’t convert.
McDermott led Creighton with 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Grant Gibbs had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Harrison paced St. John’s with 19 points.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 13 when it takes on Butler at 6:05 pm Central.
