Doug McDermott hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 47.8 seconds to start a game-ending 7-0 run and deliver his father Greg with win number 100 at Creighton as the No. 18 Bluejays held on at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, 68-63, on Thursday night in Indianapolis. Creighton improved to 20-4 on the season and is 10-2 in BIG EAST play.
Butler had two chances for a late lead but twice lost the ball and a three-point try that might have forced overtime was short.
McDermott broke the tie with a three, and Andrew Chrabascz tied it again with a three of his own with 4 minutes left. That’s how it stayed until Khyle Marshall banked in a short jumper with 1:13 left to Butler a 63-61 lead. McDermott hit another three the Bulldogs didn’t score again as Creighton closed it out at the free-throw line. McDermott passed Allan Houston and Kevin Bradshaw to move into 15th place on the NCAA’s career scoring list. He now has 2,824 points.
