Another attempt by Omaha State Senator Scott Lautenbaugh to bring charter schools to Nebraska. Nebraska is one of eight states in the nation that do not offer charter schools as an option. He says the first step would be for a pilot program in the Omaha Public School District.
Charter schools are funded the same as public schools but the do not have to follow the public school process. The school develops its own charter and operates on those standards. Senator Lautenbaugh prefers to call the “independent public schools”.
The Education Committee is expected to look at his bill next week. A similar bill failed to make it out of committee last year.
