Nebraskans want property tax relief. Omaha State Senator Jeremy Nordquist says that message is loud and clear so tax reform is a priority this legislative session. He says right now lawmakers hands are tied when it comes to residential and commercial property so that is why he is pushing for a Constitutional Amendment Bill that would provide lawmakers the flexibility to look at options down the road.
Senator Nordquist says we do have some exemptions in the state constitution now that allows agriculture land to be taxed a rate not uniform to other property. He says that is why they can adjust the tax rate on that property but not others. The change in the constitution would allow future lawmakers to make those adjustments on residential and commercial property if they so choose.
Senator Nordquist says if the bill moves out of committee it would go before the full legislature for debate. He says if it is approved it would go on the November ballot for voters to decide.
