A judge today granted accused murderer Nikko Jenkins request to represent himself in his upcoming trial. Jenkins is accused of murdering Jorge Cajiga-Ruiz, Juan Uribe-Pena, Curtis Bradford and Angela Kruger last August.
Jenkins will still receive guidance from the public defender’s office but they will not represent him in court.
After his arrest last year Jenkins pleaded not guilty. He later wanted to change that plea to guilty and then demanded he be released because his constitutional rights were violated. There was also the question if Jenkins was competent to stand trial. He argued he was mentally ill and did not receive the needed treatment while in prison. A judge ordered a competency hearing and it was determined Jenkins could stand trial.
