Deadline is Monday at midnight to sign up for a health insurance policy through the required Affordable Care Act, the federal health insurance law. Andy Williams is the Director of Consumer Marketing with Blue Cross and Blue Shield Nebraska and he expects the next four days to be extremely busy.
Williams says those working with an insurance agent or broker and are not completely signed up by the deadline will still meet those requirements. Those who miss the deadline completely will have to wait until the next sign up and likely pay a penalty. There are special enrollment life events throughout the year where people will be allowed to sign up. Those include marriage, divorce, loss of job and birth or adoption of child.
Those who miss the deadline will also have to pay a penalty for not signing up. Williams says about 12% of Nebraskans are uninsured or about 200,000 individuals. He says about 12% of those, or about 26,000 have signed up for coverage.
He says many of the glitches have been worked out regarding the sign up process and from start to finish should take less than an hour.
