Gov. Dave Heineman has proclaimed May as Beef Month in Nebraska.
The proclamation highlights a sector of the agricultural industry that drives Nebraska’s economy. Nebraska has nearly 50,000 farms. Nearly half of them raise cattle.
In 2012, Farmers and ranchers produced $23 billion in products, roughly $10 billion from cattle.
As part of the celebration, Stella’s Bar and Grill in Bellevue has been formally acknowledged as the winner of the statewide Best Burger Competition. The Nebraska Beef Council started the contest in 2011. The public makes nominations and a panel of judges visits the finalists. The “Stella Cheeseburger” won the contest.
Nebraska is a top farm state. Recently, Nebraska became the top cattle feeding state in the nation.
