Sunday’s storm left a path of destruction in many parts of the state. Jim Hegerty with Nebraska’s Better Business Bureau says victims with property damage may receive a knock on the door from representatives of out-of-state companies offering to make repairs. He says some are very reputable companies but others are not. He says there are companies that are storm chasers and travel from one spot to another preying on disaster victims. He says they often go door to door to solicit business or leave hangers on doorknobs.
Hegerty says those with property damage should first contact their insurance company to find out what their responsibilities are and how best to manage repairs. Many times several estimates are required before insurance companies decide who they will pay to do the job. Unfortunately, some of these fly-by-night companies come in and offer to do the job for much less. Hegerty says this is where you must be careful as many times they are not insured and disappear after the job is done leaving you with no one to contact if the job isn’t done correctly.
Hegerty says never sign on the dotted line if they require payments up front. Always get the name of their insurance company and give them a call to make sure they have coverage. Get all the details in writing as to when the work will start and when they will be finished.
Hegerty says if you have any questions about a company it is always a good idea to contact the Better Business Bureau first. Their number is 402-391-7612.
