19 year old Nebraska student athletes Josh Banderas and Lucas Keifer were charged by Lancaster County prosecutors on Tuesday for stealing seven bicycles off a bike rake on the University of Lincoln campus late Monday afternoon.
Banderas, a middle linebacker on the Husker football team, and Keifer, a long distance runner, were pulled over by police just after 5 p.m. on Monday after a witness called 911.
The witness claimed to see two people using bolt cutters and clipping locks, before loading the bikes onto a pickup truck.
Both student-athletes were taken into custody on suspicion of possession of burglar’s tools and theft after being stopped by police. The bikes are valued at approximately $1,700. Both were released on $3,500 bond and have a court appearance set for June 17.
A Nebraska Athletic Department spokesman said administrators and coaches are aware of the incident and have no further comment.
Banderas earned extensive playing time at linebacker as a true freshman last season. Banderas started four games at MIKE linebacker in the first half of the season.
Keifer competed in two meets for NU throughout the indoor season… registered personal-best times of 4:31.92 in the mile and 9:03.76 in the 3,000 meters.
Both student-athletes attended Lincoln Southwest High School.
