Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer is calling for the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki for his failed leadership in addressing the growing national scandal surrounding the agency. However, Nebraska U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says that he is concerned about the agency running without a leader during the lengthy time it would take to vet a new leader.
Senator Fischer announced she has also introduced legislation to prohibit the payment of bonuses to employees at the Veterans Health Administration through Fiscal Year 2015. A member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Johanns says he finds it hard to believe that President Obama didn’t have prior knowledge of what was happening. Johanns also doubts the problems are confined to the Phoenix VA Center.
Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki says he hopes to have a preliminary report soon on how widespread treatment delays and falsified patient scheduling reports are at VA facilities nationwide. There are allegations that up to 40 veterans may have died while awaiting treatment at the Phoenix VA center.
