Omaha Marian grabs record 12th state soccer title, Gretna passes Elkhorn South in OT

May 20, 2014 By Bill Pollock

Omaha Marian won its state-record 12th girls soccer championship with a 1-0 win against Millard North in the Class A final Monday at Morrison Stadium.  Junior forward Faith Carter scored the only goal in the 21st minute.

Top-ranked Marian finishes 18-1, with its only loss against No. 2 Millard North, in the Metro Conference Tournament championship.  Marian or Millard North has won six of the past nine state titles. Millard North (18-3) has been state runner-up the past two seasons.

Top-ranked Elkhorn South lost to No. 3 Gretna, 2-1 in overtime of the Class B final at Morrison Stadium.  Elkhorn South had gone 11 straight matches without giving up a goal, a state record, and was closing in on a 12th match, until Gretna scored twice in a span of 4:32 to win.

Gretna forced overtime with just 44 seconds remaining in regulation with a goal by junior defender Sarah Zeleny from about 40 yards out.  Senior Makenzie Burmeister scored the winner with another long shot just 3:48 into the 20-minute overtime. It was her fifth goal of the tournament.

Elkhorn South took a 1-0 lead with five minutes remaining in regulation when Jessica Dvorak scored as the Storm were looking for their third win this season over Gretna.
