Sharp criticism of the Veterans Administration nationally doesn’t appear to be trickling down to the local VA, at least in Nebraska. Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry says that his office is able to work effectively with veterans who are engaging with the VA System here.
“From our perspective, the VA system here is providing extraordinary levels of care,” according to Fortenberry. “You’ll have a stumble here or there, or a procedural problem that we’ll try and get in the middle of and fix, but overall there is great satisfaction on the local level.”
Congressman Fortenberry says the system in Nebraska is ranked as one of the highest in terms of customer service in the country.
“It’s so good in fact, other VA systems that have been having all of these bureaucratic entanglements and difficulties, have been moving work to our system to take care of,” Fortenberry notes.
Congressman Fortenberry concedes however the national situation is scandalous and needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Fortenberry feels the systematic problems overwhelmed former VA Secretary Eric Shinseki’s capacity to deal with them.
Fortenberry’s comments follow Shinseki’s resignation last Friday. President Obama accepted Shinseki’s resignation and elevated Deputy Veterans Affairs Secretary Sloan Gibson to head the VA on an interim basis while a replacement is selected.
