Nebraska 2nd District Congressman Lee Terry removed a previous posting on his website calling Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release “wonderful news” and calling him “a national hero”. Congressman Terry says views of Bergdahl have changed dramatically in the last week and those comments were no longer appropriate.
There are a lot of questions regarding the deal made with the Taliban regarding the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. Republicans in Congress say there is a law that requires Congress be notified 30 days prior to any releases from Guantanamo.
The Obama Administration stated they had been talking to Congress about this possibility for “some time”. Congressman Lee Terry doesn’t recall any consultation. He says, “No one else any leadership positions I’ve talked to have received any, any foretelling statements.”
The Obama Administration is now saying they did not notify Congress because the Taliban made threats against Bergdahl’s life if the public was notified. There were also concerns that Bergdahl’s health was declining and a deal was made to get him medical attention.
