Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer says she is not satisfied by the briefings they’ve had from the Obama administration over the swap of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban militants. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is responding to lawmakers’ complaints over not being told in advance of the deal to swap Sgt. Bergdahl for Taliban militants.
Senator Deb Fischer is among those questioning the secrecy and the return of the five militants.
“We still have some very serious questions about why it suddenly seems that they are no longer dangerous and whether their return to Afghanistan could result in undermining over a decade of American work in that country,” Fischer says.
Fischer remained critical of the Obama administration and how they carried out briefings on the swap.
“Their stiff-arming of Congress and resisting public disclosure doesn’t foster the constructive debate we should be having,” Fischer added.
Hagel told a House Armed Services Committee hearing that mediators from Qatar warned that “time was not on our side” and a leak would sabotage a deal.
