Both South teams won 2-0 matches in the Nebraska Shrine Soccer Classic on Saturday at Nebraska-Omaha’s Caniglia Field. The field has turf that is designed for soccer and is considered one of the best soccer playing surfaces in the country.
Paige Phipps of Millard West scored first to put the South girls on the board in the first half with an unassisted goal and game MVP Natalie Johnson of Omaha Skutt added the insurance with a second half goal. Elkhorn South’s Alex Thiem had six saves to earn the win in goal. Lincoln Lutheran’s Tara Ziegelbein turned aside nine shots for the North squad.
In the boys game, Millard South’s Scott Botkin scored to put the South up 1-0 after taking a pass from Omaha South’s Michael Jaime. Elkhorn South’s Brandon Roarty scored the South’s second goal, with an assist coming from Lincoln Southwest’s Justin Wiley assisted. Crete goalie Mitch Siedfhoff made five saves and Hastings’ Christian Lomax stopped seven as they two combined for a South shutout.
