Omaha city officials closed N-P Dodge Park in preparation for potential flooding along the Missouri River. The National Weather Service reports 2 to 8 inches of rain fell north of Omaha in the past 24 hours and more rain is expected in the days ahead.
Omaha Parks Director Brook Bench says more than 340 boats are stored at the marina and many owners are now removing their vessels. Officials believe the boats will be safe. Work is being done to secure and stabilize docks. Bench says they evacuated the campground this morning.
Right now the Missouri River in Omaha is at 22 feet and flood stage is 29 feet. Over the next 18 hours the river is expected to rise six feet and by Sunday it could reach more than 30-feet and remain over flood stage for several days. Bench says this is a temporary issue and nothing like the flood of 2011.
Omaha Public Works is also taking precautions at the Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant. A 4 to 5 foot berm is being built to protect part of the plant not protected by the levee.
