Clean up is underway in Pilger after the deadly tornado Monday and volunteers are needed. Mike Wight is with the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and encourages folks that can help to do so.
Wight says safety is their biggest concern and those volunteering first need to be able to handle the heat. He recommends wearing long pants to protect the legs. Sturdy shoes are a must as there are many nails and jagged pieces of metal that can easily be stepped on. Wight says a hat and gloves are also recommended as well as a strong back.
Wight says those sponsoring collection sites and others wanting to make donations of bottled water, food and clothing are asked to hold off for just a bit. He says there is only so much room to store these items and there is also a problem with large trucks coming into the area.
The staging area for volunteers is the school in neighboring Wisner. Volunteers will then board buses that will drop them off in Pilger.
