As residents of Pilger continue to clean up after Monday’s deadly tornado, Fred Standa knows the path to recovery is not an easy one. Standa was the mayor of Mapleton, Iowa in April of 2011 when an EF-3 tornado hit the town of 14-hundred. He says somehow you get by with a little help from friends and even strangers. He says the support from the government, county, surrounding communities and from volunteers was always positive and a tremendous help during recovery.
Standa says not everyone stayed in Mapleton after the tornado. A number of those renting property that was destroyed moved on but most stayed and rebuilt. He says most of the businesses damaged three years ago are once again up and running as well. He says you have to look hard to even know that Mapleton was hit by a tornado not that long ago.
Standa says his thoughts and prayers are with the folks of Pilger, Coleridge, those in rural areas all impacted by the disaster.
