A professor of medicine at Creighton University has been struck and killed while crossing a major street in Omaha.
The Omaha Police Department reports Dr. Edward Horowitz died about 40 minutes after being struck by a car at 38th and Dodge Streets.
Police say the driver of the car, 31-year-old Pedro Diego-Antonio, fled the scene. He and a passenger, 23-year-old Simon Santos-Lorenzo, have been taken into custody. Diego-Antonio is charged with motor vehicle homicide, felony Driving Under the Influence causing serious bodily injury or death, and felony leaving the scene. Santos-Lorenzo is accused of being an accessory in the vehicular homicide.
Police say they caught a break when a witness to the hit and run trailed the suspect’s vehicle, sent the license plate number via text to police, and then called 911.
According to police, Horowitz waited for the proper signal at a crosswalk before attempting to cross the street around 4:30 Sunday afternoon. He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he died.
