Those getting new land-lines or cell phones in eastern Nebraska will soon see a new area code assignment. The new 531 code will also be used in the 402 code area. Cullen Robbins is GIS Analyst and Information Technology – Telecom specialist with the Nebraska Public Service Commission and is still uncertain when phone companies will be assigning the new area code but it is available for them to use when needed.
The 531 area code is in addition to the 402 code and current customers will not have to change. The new area code is needed due to demand and the lack of 402 numbers available.
The Nebraska Service Commission reminds callers that you will need to dial 531 prior to dialing the rest of the phone number – just as we currently do with 402. There is no need to dial a 1 first.
