A health alert is posted due to toxic blue-green algae at two popular recreation areas in Nebraska.
Swimming is now considered dangerous at Willow Creek Reservoir in Pierce County and at Rockford Lake in Gage County, according to Brian McManus, spokesman for the Department of Environmental Quality.
McManus says, “If you expose it to your skin for a long duration, it can cause rashes and you definitely don’t want to be in a situation where you would swallow the water because it could cause a flu-like illness.”
The alert for Willow Creek Reservoir will be in effect for at least two weeks, but McManus says Rockford Lake may be safe in about a week.
“We have to have two consecutive weeks of lower readings before we issue an all-clear,” he says.
Boating and fishing are still permitted, but swimming is not recommended.
