It is a popular concept on the east and west coast but new to Omaha. The City Council approved a permit for Tom Meyer to open a live meat market in south Omaha.
Meyer says customers will have several options. They can select an animal from on-site pens and wait while it is slaughtered, processed and wrapped. They can also call in an order or just walk in and tell them what you would like without selecting the animal first.
This has some residents upset because they are under the impression the slaughter would be in plain view. Meyer says that isn’t the case at all. They will have a viewing area available for customers who want to watch but they will not be allowed inside the slaughter area. There will also have a waiting area away from the slaughter floor.
Meyer says they will have hogs, goats, sheep, rabbits and poultry available. He says the plan to open by late spring of 2015.
