Many Nebraskans remember gathering around the TV Sunday evenings to watch Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the TV show Wild Kingdom returned last year as a web series. The host is Stephanie Arne who began her career at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Arne was the coordinator of the Education Department and she worked in the penguin exhibit. Arne returned to Omaha this year to film a segment at the Henry Doorly Zoo.
Arne says, “When they told me they were going back to film the stories of the penguins I got to revisit some of the penguins that I knew. Something really awesome is this time I asked if I could jump in the water with them. So I went into 38-degree water, sat at the bottom and watched 30 penguins swim all around my head.”
Arne has toured the world filming the web series and her travels included stops in Australia, New Zealand, Borneo and Papua New Guinea. She says every day is an adventure and she has been chased by a hippo, was nearly squashed by an elephant and swam with the sharks.
Arne says this year’s web series already featured elephants and cheetahs. On August 13th an episode will air on giraffes and on August 27th the one featuring penguins at the Henry Doorly Zoo.
Episodes can be seen at WildKingdom.com or at the Wild Kingdom YouTube channel.
