Heavy rains this past week caused a lot of problems for many Nebraskans. There have been reports of streets washed away, flooding and water seeping into basements. Thrasher Basement Systems Chief Operating Officer Nick Rohe says when the ground becomes saturated with water seepage is a common problem. However some people experienced more than just damp walls.
Rohe says sometimes a quick fix solves the problem. That includes adding dirt around the foundation or adding extenders to down spouts to keep the water away from the foundation. He says other times extensive work, like installing a sump pump system, is needed. The cost to fix the problem can range from a few hundred dollars up to $10,000.
Another question is how much homeowner’s insurance covers. If there is damage from a sewer or water back-up the policy will kick in. Insurance also covers sump pump failure. When it comes to damage from water seepage you are on your own.
