Despite falling behind FCS-level McNeese State 7-0 early in the first quarter, 18th-ranked Nebraska battled back to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter of play at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The Huskers were stopped on a fourth-and-1 near midfield, with the Cowboys taking advantage and getting on the board with a 5-yard touchdown run by Derrick Milton with 8:26 to play in the opening quarter.
Nebraska responded with a six play, 73-yard drive that was capped off by Tommy Armstrong’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Westerkamp on a 3rd-and-10. The Huskers forced a McNeese State punt on the next possession and then grabbed the lead thanks to a two-yard touchdown run from Ameer Abdullah to take a 14-7 lead. The six-play, 67-yard drive featured a career-long 42-yard run from Armstrong to set the Huskers up.
Armstrong leads all players with 45 yards rushing on two carries, while Nate Holmes led the Cowboys with three carries for 23 yards. McNeese State converted 3-of-5 on third downs and a successful fourth down en route to their lone touchdown. The Cowboys also held the ball for 9:10 of the first 15:00 to open the game.
